Fact Check

The claim is FALSE. There is no scientific evidence or medical consensus that these ingredients can reliably or immediately induce periods within 24 hours.

What Are Irregular Periods?

A healthy periods or menstrual cycle typically lasts 2 to 7 days and occurs every 21 to 35 days. Yet, about 14–25% of women experience irregularities, such as unusually heavy or light bleeding, early or delayed onset, intense cramps, or erratic cycle timing. Some may have spotting between periods or miss their cycle for several months. These disruptions are often linked to hormonal imbalances involving estrogen and progesterone. Conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), use of contraceptives, breastfeeding, excessive exercise, thyroid problems, and IUDs are common culprits. Lifestyle factors such as stress, obesity, and smoking can also play a role.

Is It Possible to Start Your Period in a Day?

If your period is nearing, it might naturally begin within a day. However, in cases of underlying issues like PCOS, PCOD, thyroid dysfunction, or stress, inducing menstruation in a day is not medically realistic. These conditions usually require proper diagnosis and treatment. It's also important to note that if pregnancy has occurred, menstruation will not take place.

What are the Health Benefits of Ajwain, Methi dana, Jaggery, and ginger?

Carom seeds, commonly known as ajwain and part of the Apiaceae family, are prized for their therapeutic and nutritional value. Also referred to as bishop’s weed or ajowan caraway, these seeds are packed with bioactive compounds that exhibit a wide range of health-promoting effects, including antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, cytotoxic, antilithiasis, nematicidal, anthelmintic, and antifilarial properties. From a nutritional perspective, ajwain acts as a natural stimulant, sialagogue, stomachic, and carminative, with aromatic and antiseptic attributes—making it especially beneficial for digestive health and general wellness.

Fenugreek, commonly known as Methi, is one of the oldest known medicinal herbs, valued for both its therapeutic and nutritional benefits. Its seeds are packed with fiber, essential fatty acids like oleic, linoleic, and linolenic acids, phospholipids, glycolipids, choline, and vitamins such as A, B1, B2, C, niacin, and nicotinic acid, along with many other health-promoting compounds. Traditionally used worldwide as a culinary spice to enhance flavor, fenugreek is also recognized for its potent medicinal effects, including antidiabetic, anticancer, cholesterol-lowering, antioxidant, and immune-boosting properties.

Jaggery is a traditional natural sweetener made by concentrating the sap from sugarcane or palm trees. It is a good source of essential minerals such as iron, magnesium, potassium, and phosphorus. Known for its rich flavor and aroma, jaggery is widely used as a base ingredient in various sweet dishes globally. Beyond its culinary use, jaggery offers several health benefits—it aids digestion, helps relieve constipation, and provides a quick energy boost.

Ginger, or Adrak, is well-known for its impressive health benefits and therapeutic properties. Packed with bioactive compounds, it offers strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects that help guard against oxidative stress and support immune function. Ginger is especially useful in easing inflammation and relaxing muscles, making it effective for pain relief and discomfort. Its immune-enhancing qualities also contribute to better overall health and resilience. With its natural healing potential, ginger serves as a valuable dietary addition for promoting wellness and managing various health issues.

Can ajwain, methi dana, jaggery, and ginger drink induce periods within a day?

The social media post claiming that a drink of ajwain, methi dana, jaggery, and ginger can induce periods within a day is FALSE. Ajwain and Methi dana may help in relieving menstrual pain. However, no scientific evidence or medical consensus supports the claim that this drink can guarantee menstruation within 24 hours.

Ajwain holds a prominent place in traditional medicine due to its wide range of therapeutic effects. Research by Aditya Khedekar and colleagues has shown that ajwain possesses significant antifungal, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties. It may help alleviate issues such as poor appetite, asthma, and menstrual discomfort.

Methi dana, or fenugreek, is widely used in traditional medicine and is known for its potential benefits in women's health. A review in the Journal of Herbal Medicine notes that fenugreek has been extensively used in ethnomedicine worldwide to address various female health concerns. The study points to its possible therapeutic effects in promoting lactation, easing menstrual pain, managing PCOS symptoms, and supporting women during menopause.

It can be concluded that the claim that ajwain, methi dana may help in relieving menstrual pain but ajwain, methi dana, jaggery and ginger drink can trigger periods in a day is not backed by clinical research or medical consensus.

In a conversation Dr. Lepakshi Dasari, Consultant Gynaecologist & Laparoscopic Surgeon, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad said, "While ajwain and ginger are generally safe in small amounts, using them in larger quantities or frequently—especially for the purpose of inducing periods—can have some negative effects. These herbs are not a substitute for medicines. These are not medically guaranteed methods and may not work for everyone.

Avoid if pregnant or if there’s a chance you may be pregnant as stimulating the uterus can be harmful.

Do not use repeatedly or in large doses just to bring on a period, it could signal an underlying health condition needing diagnosis.

If periods are irregular, it’s best to get hormonal levels, thyroid, and PCOS evaluated by a doctor."

Dr. Sarada Vani N, Senior Consultant Obstetrics & Gynaecology, High-Risk Pregnancy Specialist, Robotic Laparoscopic Surgeon, Yashoda Hospitals further said, "There are two kinds of amenorrhea: primary and secondary. Primary amenorrhea is when a person older than 15 has never gotten their first period. Secondary amenorrhea happens when a person doesn’t get a period for more than three months. A complex system of hormones controls your menstrual cycle. Every cycle, these hormones prepare your uterus for a possible pregnancy. If there’s no pregnancy that cycle, you shed your uterine lining. That shedding is your period. Absence of menstrual periods or amenorrhoea can result from various causes that may be physiological, pathological, such as Hormonal Imbalances, life style factors, genetic abnormalities and use of some medications. Treatment for amenorrhea is highly individualized and depends on the underlying cause. Ajwain is known for its warming properties and may help with digestion ,but it's not a quick fix for delayed periods. Jaggery, a natural sweetener, offers several health benefits due to its rich nutrient profile. It aids digestion, boosts immunity, and provides a slow, sustained release of energy. Instead Balanced diet, regular exercise, and stress management can help regulate your menstrual cycle."
