Rare Black Brain Tumour Removed from 72-Year-Old Woman at Fortis Shalimar Bagh

New Delhi: A 72-year-old woman successfully underwent a rare and complex dual brain surgery at Fortis Hospital Shalimar Bagh to remove a black brain tumour (melanoma), a condition reported in only 0.5 per 10 million cases annually. The tumour had caused recurring brain haemorrhages, leading to paralysis and speech difficulties, leaving the patient bedridden.

The medical journey began in October last year when the patient experienced a loss of consciousness and right-sided weakness. Initial treatment in Gwalior revealed a brain haemorrhage, which was treated conservatively.

However, earlier this year, her condition worsened, resulting in paralysis and speech difficulties. Further imaging revealed a larger clot and tumour recurrence. Seeking advanced care, she was brought to Fortis Shalimar Bagh for expert intervention.

A detailed diagnosis identified a bleeding tumour on both sides of her brain. The patient underwent two stages of surgery under the leadership of Dr. Sonal Gupta, Senior Director & HOD Neurosurgery, Fortis Shalimar Bagh.

The first surgery addressed the tumour on the left side of her brain and lasted 9–10 hours. After 48 hours, the second surgery targeted the tumour in the bone on the right side of her brain.

"The challenges included the tumour's rarity, the patient’s age, and the need for two surgeries in quick succession, compounded by pre-existing issues such as spontaneous layer formation in the breathing pipe. Post-surgery, she required bronchoscopic treatment to manage ventilation complications. Without timely treatment, the tumour would have proven fatal within months," explained Dr. Sonal Gupta. "With complete therapy, her five-year survival chances are now 70–80%, and she is leading an independent life with no disabling deficits."
