Mumbai: Often referred to as the Diabetes Capital of the World, India faces a growing health burden as millions are affected by the condition. With the rise in diabetes globally, awareness and lifestyle modifications have become essential for its prevention and management.
In line with this mission, Zen Multispeciality Hospital, Chembur, conducted a 2.5 km Walkathon during which more than 300 participants pledged to prioritize their health, prevent complications, and promote awareness within the community.
The Walkathon was more than a fitness event, it represented a collective movement of hope, unity, and education. Participants marched through the streets of Chembur holding placards that highlighted messages on diabetes awareness, prevention, and management, reinforcing the idea that a healthier lifestyle begins with a single conscious step.
Diabetes remains one of India’s most rapidly growing health challenges. Beyond elevated blood sugar levels, uncontrolled diabetes can lead to serious complications, including heart disease, kidney failure, vision loss, and diabetic foot—a condition characterized by poor circulation and nerve damage that can lead to infections and, in severe cases, amputation.
While many individuals regularly monitor their blood sugar, foot care is often overlooked despite being a critical aspect of diabetes management.
This year’s theme, “Diabetic Foot,” emphasized the importance of simple daily practices such as routine foot inspection, wearing appropriate footwear, and maintaining blood sugar levels—all of which can significantly reduce risks. Walkathons like this play an important role in promoting diabetes management strategies and enhancing the quality of life for patients.
Dr. Roy Patankar, Director of Zen Multispeciality Hospital, stated, “Through this walkathon, we wanted to convey a simple yet powerful message: diabetes can be managed, and its complications can be prevented if addressed early.
Regular exercise, a balanced diet, timely check-ups, and awareness about foot care greatly improve long-term outcomes. At Zen Hospital, we are committed to building a healthier community, and initiatives like these encourage individuals to take the first step toward positive change.”
