54-Year-Old Woman Saved After Rare Heart Transplant

New Delhi: Doctors at HCMCT Manipal Hospitals Dwarka, New Delhi successfully performed a life-saving heart transplant on a 54-year-old woman from Haryana who was suffering from end-stage heart failure. After years of cardiac deterioration despite optimal treatment and advanced interventions, receiving a healthy donor heart gave her a renewed chance at survival and stability.

The patient arrived in a severely critical condition with an ejection fraction of just 15%, repeated hospital admissions, whole-body swelling, extreme fatigue and breathlessness that made even basic movement difficult.

She required intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) support for 10 days and had previously undergone cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT-D), yet her condition continued to decline, leaving heart transplantation as the only option.

After a month-long wait, a compatible donor heart became available from a private hospital in Gurgaon. It was transported swiftly to Dwarka through a green corridor and transplanted by Dr. Yugal Kishore Mishra, Chairman – Manipal Institute of Cardiac Sciences and Chief Cardiovascular Surgeon, along with his team.

The surgery took 3 hours and 20 minutes, and the new heart began functioning strongly soon after implantation.

Dr. Mishra shared that this outcome reflects the extensive efforts put into building a reliable, comprehensive heart failure and transplant program. He noted that timely intervention across the different stages of heart failure is essential, especially in women, where disease progression can be rapid. The patient showed significant improvement within 15 days of the transplant.

Ms. Viji Varghese, Hospital Director, said the procedure required exceptional coordination, quick clinical decisions and precise surgical execution, especially given the patient’s fragile condition. She emphasised the hospital’s capabilities in delivering advanced cardiac care supported by strong clinical and operational teams.

The case further demonstrates the hospital’s growing role as a centre offering advanced heart failure treatments and transplant services in Delhi NCR.

With comprehensive interventional options such as minimally invasive valve surgery, CRT-D, LVAD support, TAVR and heart transplantation, the hospital provides integrated, timely care tailored to the needs of patients with complex cardiac conditions.
