Visakhapatnam: In a significant medical success, Dr. L. Vijay and the team at CARE Hospitals, Visakhapatnam performed a lifesaving heart transplant on Mr. D. Chandra Sekher Patro, a 54-year-old businessman from the city. The procedure has given him a renewed chance at life.

The donor heart was transported from a hospital in Srikakulam through a swiftly arranged green corridor, created by the police departments of both Srikakulam and Visakhapatnam. Their timely coordination ensured minimal ischemic time and smooth transfer of the organ, making the surgery possible.

Visakhapatnam has been steadily developing into a strong hub for advanced healthcare in eastern India, and this successful transplant further strengthens its position as a dependable destination for complex treatments.

It brings new hope to cardiac patients across Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and parts of the Northeast who previously relied on major metro cities for such procedures.

Mr. Patro, who had been diagnosed with Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy (TCMP) and recurrent Ventricular Tachycardia, had earlier undergone AICD implantation at CARE Hospitals. With his condition worsening, he was listed for a heart transplant through the Jeevandan program.

On 26th October 2025, a compatible donor heart became available in Srikakulam. Within minutes, hospital teams and police authorities coordinated to transport the organ across districts.

The Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery team at CARE Hospitals—led by Dr. L. Vijay, with contributions from Dr. C. V. Rao, Dr. Venu Gopal, and the cardiac anesthesiology specialists—carried out the transplant with precise synchronization.

After a carefully executed surgery and dedicated post-operative management, Mr. Patro recovered steadily and was discharged on 6th November 2025. At his first follow-up, he was able to walk comfortably, with stable cardiac function and normal blood parameters.

Dr. Vijay emphasized that heart transplantation demands accurate coordination across multiple teams—from retrieving the donor organ to preserving and implanting it. He credited the expertise of surgeons, cardiac anesthetists, trained support staff, and advanced medical infrastructure at CARE Hospitals for making this complex procedure possible.

Officials from Jeevandan and the police department also acknowledged the effort. They noted that quick execution of the green corridor and smooth collaboration between all stakeholders ensured that the organ reached within the golden time, ultimately saving a life.

CARE Hospitals, Visakhapatnam continues to enhance its reputation for advanced cardiac care, offering progressive treatment options and comprehensive support for patients with end-stage heart disease.
