Minimally Invasive Heart Valve Replacement Saves High-Risk Patient at Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road

Bengaluru: Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, performed a minimally invasive heart valve replacement on a 65-year-old woman who had previously undergone valve repair with a support ring. The patient, at high risk for open-heart surgery due to repeated valve failures, was not suitable for conventional treatment.

Mrs. Rekha had earlier undergone balloon dilation for a narrowed heart valve, followed by a valve repair in 2013 using Teflon bands. Over time, her valve tissue deteriorated, causing failure and putting her life at serious risk.

The earlier Teflon band was incomplete and not easily visible on X-rays, providing limited support for a new valve and adding complexity to the procedure.

The team used Transcatheter Mitral Valve Replacement (TMVR), a minimally invasive procedure where the replacement valve is guided through a vein in the groin via a catheter. TMVR is generally used for failed bioprosthetic valves or standard annuloplasty rings and provides a safer alternative to open-heart surgery for high-risk patients.

After careful planning and detailed imaging, the interventional cardiology team performed the procedure with precision. Advanced imaging helped map the area around the damaged mitral valve, allowing accurate placement of the new Meril MyVal, an Indian-made valve, through a small catheter.

The surgery was carried out under the supervision of Dr. Srinivasa Prasad B V, Additional Director – Interventional Cardiology, along with internal medicine specialists, anesthetists, and imaging experts.

Dr. Srinivasa Prasad BV said, “The patient had a complex medical history including multiple prior surgeries, residual effects of a perioperative stroke, and chest scars. Redo open-heart surgery was extremely risky.

Without this procedure, she would have faced repeated hospitalizations and higher mortality risk. Our approach, combining detailed planning, advanced imaging, and precise execution, allowed for a safer intervention and positive outcome.”

The patient and her family expressed gratitude, stating, “Learning that this procedure could be done safely without the risks of a traditional redo surgery gave us hope. Her smooth recovery and regained strength have been a huge relief. We are thankful to the Fortis team for their expertise and care.”

Dr. Thejaswini Parthasarathy, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital, Bannerghatta Road, said, “This procedure demonstrates how careful planning, advanced technology, and coordinated teamwork can help patients with complex heart conditions.

By providing a less invasive option, we aim to ensure safer treatment and quicker recovery while supporting better outcomes.”
