NIMS Hyderabad Performs Complex Cardiac Ablation Procedures on Two Children
Hyderabad: Two young patients with complex heart rhythm disorders were successfully treated with advanced Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) procedures under Dr. Oruganti Sai Satish, Fellowship in Electrophysiology at Nizams Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad.
The first case involved a 15-year-old boy from Khammam who had been suffering from recurrent palpitations, chest discomfort, and episodes of sweating since early childhood. He was diagnosed with a rare congenital condition known as dextrocardia with situs inversus.
In this condition, the heart is located on the right side of the chest rather than the left, and the positions of the major organs in the thorax and abdomen are reversed like a mirror image.
This unusual anatomy can complicate both diagnosis and treatment. It presents technical challenges such as distorted cardiac structure, difficulty in catheter navigation, and complex interpretation of abnormal electrical circuits causing arrhythmias.
With the help of 3D electro-anatomical mapping, the team identified an abnormal extra electrical pathway along with another circuit responsible for the palpitations. Both were successfully ablated using RF energy.
The second case was a 14-year-old student from Hyderabad who had experienced over 25 episodes of palpitations in the past four months. Evaluation revealed an abnormal electrical focus on the left side of the heart near the mitral valve. Using 3D mapping, the abnormal focus was precisely identified and ablated with RF energy.
Following the procedures, both patients were completely free of palpitations. NIMS performed both procedures free of cost under the Telangana State Aarogyasri (ARSR) and Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) schemes.
The medical team included Dr. Hemanth, Dr. Sunita, Dr. Ajeya, Dr. Mounika (Senior Resident), Dr. Anurag, cath lab technicians Prameela and Rama Rao, and nursing officer Florence.
