Siblings in Their 20s Saved From Silent Heart Blockages at Fortis Hospital
Bengaluru: What was meant to be a simple routine health check-up turned into a life-saving discovery for Chikmangalur-based siblings. Both young, active, and seemingly healthy, the duo had no prior symptoms or known health concerns.
However, during their routine health check, doctors detected severe coronary artery blockages caused by a genetic disorder, a finding that shocked the family and changed their lives overnight.
Following advanced cardiac evaluation, Neeraj and Neeti were diagnosed with Familial Hypercholesterolemia (FH)- an inherited condition that leads to dangerously high cholesterol levels and as a consequence can develop premature coronary artery disease.
Despite their young age and lack of symptoms, advanced imaging showed multiple critical blockages in their heart arteries that put them at an imminent risk of a heart attack.
Acting swiftly, the cardiac team under the expert guidance of Dr. Sudarshan G.T., Additional Director – Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery and Dr. Mathew Maurish Thomas, Associate Consultant – Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery at Fortis Hospital Nagarbhavi, performed complex Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) surgeries on both siblings on the same day.
Each surgery lasting nearly five hours, was performed on a beating heart using the siblings’ own arteries and veins for grafting. Neeti received four bypass grafts, while Neeraj received three. Post-surgery, both were monitored closely in the intensive care unit and discharged in a stable, improved condition within 10 days.
Dr. Sudarshan G.T., Additional Director – Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Fortis Hospital, Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru explained, “Finding such extensive coronary blockages in two siblings in their early 20s without a single warning sign is both rare and alarming.
This case highlights the silent yet aggressive nature of Familial Hypercholesterolemia and why early detection is critical. Preventive health screenings play a crucial role in identifying high-risk individuals before life-threatening events such as heart attacks occur. Timely surgical intervention can make the difference between life and sudden cardiac death.”
Dr. Mathew Maurish Thomas, Associate Consultant – Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, Fortis Hospital, Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru explained, “Discovering such severe coronary artery disease in two siblings as young as 22 and 24, both completely asymptomatic was incredibly rare and deeply concerning.
Their case is a powerful reminder that heart disease can remain silent and strike unexpectedly, even in the young. Thanks to timely diagnosis through a routine health check-up and successful bypass surgeries, we were able to restore healthy blood flow and safeguard their future.
However, this marks the beginning of lifelong care, they will need regular follow-ups, medication, and lifestyle adjustments to protect their hearts.”
Mr. Ratheef Naik, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital, Nagarbhavi, Bengaluru, added, “This case highlights not only the clinical excellence and expertise of our team but also the importance of regular health check-ups in detecting silent diseases early.
Preventive screenings are often the first step in identifying risks before they become life-threatening. At Fortis, we remain committed to proactive, compassionate, and advanced care for all our patients.”
