Bengaluru: Fortis Hospital, Cunningham Road, has successfully performed a robot-assisted kidney transplant on a 61-year-old African doctor, Dr Benson, suffering from End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

The surgery, led by a multidisciplinary team including Dr Mohan Keshavamurthy, Dr Shakir Tabrez, and Dr Renuka Prasad, marks a significant achievement in managing complex medical cases.

Dr Benson had been battling ESRD for over six months, relying on regular dialysis while contending with morbid obesity and long-standing hypertension. Despite seeking treatment at multiple hospitals across several countries, his condition was deemed too high-risk for conventional procedures.

After a comprehensive evaluation at Fortis Hospital, a robot-assisted kidney transplant was identified as the best course of action. His 23-year-old son was deemed a suitable donor following thorough screening. The transplant was executed with precision, and the patient recovered well, being discharged just six days post-surgery.

Sharing insights into the case, Dr Mohan Keshavamurthy, Senior Director, Urology, Uro-Oncology, Kidney Transplant & Robotic Surgery, said, “In complex cases like this, robotic surgery is an ideal approach due to its precision, smaller incisions, reduced tissue damage, and faster recovery. The enhanced 3D visualization provided by robotic technology ensures meticulous dissection and graft placement. This successful outcome reflects our expertise and collaborative efforts in managing high-risk cases using advanced technology.”

Dr Shakir Tabrez, Additional Director, Urology, Kidney Transplant & Robotic Surgery, emphasized, “This case presented significant challenges due to the patient’s obesity, hypertension, and long-term dialysis dependency. Leveraging robotic technology allowed us to minimize incision size, reduce complications, and ensure faster healing. The patient’s kidney function normalized within 72 hours, marking a remarkable recovery.”

Expressing his gratitude, Dr Benson said, “After months of struggling with ESRD and being turned away by other hospitals, Fortis gave me a second chance at life through this successful robotic kidney transplant. I’m deeply thankful to the team for their exceptional care and expertise.”

Mr Akshay Oleti, Business Head, Fortis Hospitals Bengaluru, added, “This case highlights the advanced capabilities of our team and robotic technology in managing high-risk procedures. We are proud to deliver world-class healthcare and see patients like Dr. Benson recover successfully.”
