Mumbai: A multidisciplinary team at Zynova Shalby Hospital, led by Dr. Hemant Patel, General and Laparoscopic Surgeon, alongside Physician Dr. Urvi Maheshwari and Intensivist Dr. Neha Patil, successfully treated a 60-year-old Bangladeshi patient suffering from Superior Mesenteric Artery (SMA) thrombosis—a rare and potentially fatal condition affecting the small intestine.

The patient, Mr. Mohammad Monirujjaman, had a history of intestinal and liver cancer and underwent prior surgeries. His condition worsened when he began experiencing severe abdominal pain and respiratory distress, prompting him to seek treatment at multiple facilities before arriving at Zynova Shalby Hospital in Mumbai.

“Patient was admitted on Diwali afternoon, 31 October 2024, with severe abdominal pain and respiratory distress,” said Dr. Hemant Patel. “Scans and blood reports revealed complete small bowel gangrene caused by SMA thrombosis, a condition affecting only 5 in 100,000 people. His main artery supplying blood to the small intestine was blocked, leaving just a 30 cm section of viable intestine.”

Dr. Patel explained that the team performed a complex laparotomy with near-total small bowel resection, removing the gangrenous sections of the intestine and leaving only the healthy portion. “We placed a stool bag on the remaining intestine and completed the surgery in four hours. Post-surgery, the patient required intensive care, including seven days on a ventilator. He was later shifted to the ward and discharged on 18 November 2024. Today, he is symptom-free and able to perform daily activities.”

Reflecting on the case, Dr. Patel added, “Prompt and precise treatment was crucial. Delayed intervention could have cost him his life. We are in regular contact with him and his family, who are relieved to see him recover and resume his normal life.”

Expressing gratitude, the patient, Mr. Mohammad Monirujjaman, said, “After battling intestinal and liver cancer, this diagnosis of SMA thrombosis turned my life upside down. The severe pain and breathing difficulties made every day a struggle. I am forever indebted to Dr. Hemant Patel and his team for their care. I can finally live without pain and look forward to a future with hope.”
