Government Treats Over 42 Million Hypertension, 25 Million Diabetes Patients Under ‘75 by 25’ Initiative
New Delhi: Under the ambitious ‘75 by 25’ initiative, India has provided treatment to 42.01 million people with hypertension and 25.27 million with diabetes, achieving 89.7% of its target, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav informed the Parliament.
Launched in May 2023, the initiative aims to ensure standardized care for 75 million individuals suffering from these non-communicable diseases (NCDs) by December 2025. Given the increasing burden of NCDs, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has intensified efforts to address the growing public health challenge.
In a written reply to the Rajya Sabha, Jadhav highlighted the government’s commitment to combating NCDs, which contribute significantly to India’s disease burden. To further strengthen preventive healthcare, the Ministry launched a nationwide NCD screening campaign on February 20, aiming for 100% screening of individuals aged 30 years and above by March 31. The drive is being conducted at Ayushman Arogya Mandir facilities and other healthcare institutions under the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NP-NCD).
The NP-NCD program, initiated in 2010, employs a comprehensive strategy to manage NCDs, including hypertension, diabetes, oral cancer, breast cancer, and cervical cancer. It focuses on early detection, screening at all levels of healthcare, accurate diagnosis, and cost-effective treatment.
Additionally, the government has integrated teleconsultation services and real-time NCD monitoring through a dedicated portal to enhance accessibility and efficiency in patient management. The initiative also involves inter-ministerial coordination to promote public awareness and encourage healthier lifestyles to curb the growing NCD prevalence.
With hypertension and diabetes being major contributors to cardiovascular diseases and other complications, the government’s proactive approach under ‘75 by 25’ and the NP-NCD program reflects its commitment to strengthening healthcare and ensuring better disease management for millions of Indians.
As part of its long-term strategy, the government is also focusing on expanding primary healthcare infrastructure, training healthcare workers, and improving digital health records to streamline disease monitoring and patient management. These efforts align with India’s broader goal of reducing the burden of NCDs and promoting preventive healthcare at the grassroots level.
