Apollo Cancer Centre Unveils India’s First LungLife Screening Program for Early Detection of Lung Cancer
Vishakhapatnam: Apollo Cancer Centre (ACC) in Visakhapatnam has launched India’s first LungLife Screening Program, aimed at the early detection of lung cancer, which accounts for 5.9% of all cancers and 8.1% of cancer-related deaths in India.
This program uses advanced low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) to identify high-risk individuals, including those aged 50-80, with significant smoking history or a family history of lung cancer.
Lung cancer, characterized by the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the lungs, often remains asymptomatic in its early stages, leading to late diagnosis and poor outcomes.
Screening programs like LDCT are instrumental in detecting lung cancer at a treatable stage, offering a critical window for timely intervention. Early detection has been shown to significantly improve survival rates and enhance treatment outcomes, making it a cornerstone in the fight against lung cancer.
Dr K. Venkateswara Rao, Senior Consultant Pulmonology, highlighted, “Lung cancer is one of the deadliest cancers globally, but early detection significantly enhances survival chances. Through the LungLife Screening Program, we use advanced LDCT technology that minimizes radiation exposure while maximizing diagnostic precision, empowering patients with better treatment outcomes.”
Dr Avala Ravicharan, Consultant Pulmonologist, added, “This program is particularly impactful for individuals with a history of smoking or passive smoking exposure. By detecting lung cancer at a treatable stage, we offer renewed hope for a healthier future.”
Dr Rakesh Reddy Boya, Senior Consultant in Medical and Hemato Oncology, stated, “This initiative focuses on early-stage detection, exponentially increasing the chances of effective treatment and recovery. By combining state-of-the-art technology with patient-centric care, we aim to transform lives through timely interventions.”
Dr Pradeep Ventrapati, Consultant Medical Oncology, remarked, “Lung cancer is a silent threat often detected late. The LungLife Screening Program revolutionizes lung cancer care by prioritizing early detection and precision diagnostics, significantly improving survival rates.”
Mr J. Ramchandra, COO of Apollo Hospitals, Visakhapatnam, emphasized, “We are proud to lead the way with the LungLife Screening Program. Our goal is to not only save lives, but also empower individuals with the tools to take control of their health.”
