58-Year-Old Saved From Brain Hemorrhage Through Minimally Invasive Keyhole Surgery

Thane: A 58-year-old man with a life-threatening brain hemorrhage was successfully treated through a minimally invasive ‘keyhole’ surgery at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, thanks to the swift intervention of Dr Kapil Khandelwal, Consultant Spine Surgeon, and the hospital’s neurosurgical team.

The patient, who had a history of uncontrolled blood pressure, suddenly developed weakness on one side of his body and became drowsy. A brain scan revealed a large blood clot deep within the brain, causing significant pressure on vital areas and shifting the brain off-center, a condition that could have proved fatal if not treated immediately.

Recognizing the urgency, the medical team opted for a keyhole procedure. This approach involved creating a small opening in the skull to access and remove the clot, carefully preserving the surrounding healthy brain tissue.

“Using this minimally invasive method, we were able to relieve pressure in the brain safely, without the risks associated with traditional open surgery,” explained Dr Khandelwal.

Following the procedure, the patient began showing signs of improvement, with follow-up scans confirming that the blood had been cleared and the brain had returned to its normal position. Early physiotherapy was initiated to help him regain strength, coordination, and alertness.
