66-Year-Old Man Back Home in 18 Hours After Double Knee Surgery – Max Super Speciality Hospital

New Delhi: Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, has set a global record in joint replacement surgery by discharging a patient just 18 hours after a bilateral total knee replacement procedure.

The patient, a 66-year-old man, had been experiencing persistent knee pain and difficulty in walking due to advanced bilateral osteoarthritis with varus deformity, a condition where both knees bend inward because of severe arthritis.

His daily routine had become increasingly difficult, and conventional non-surgical treatments no longer provided the relief he needed. Determined to regain mobility and independence, he sought surgical care at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket.

At the hospital, Dr Sujoy Bhattacharjee, Chairman of the Max Institute of Robotic Joint Replacement, and his team performed the surgery using advanced medial pivot knee implants. The procedure was completed without the need for a blood transfusion.

These implants are specifically designed to restore strength, stability, and natural knee movement, helping patients return to normal activities more comfortably.

Explaining the uniqueness of this case, Dr Bhattacharjee said, “Typically, knee replacement surgeries require a hospital stay of several days. Even with the most advanced recovery programs, patients are usually discharged three to four days after surgery.

In this case, the patient was admitted on the evening of September 1, underwent surgery on September 2, and returned home on the morning of September 3. The total hospital stay was less than 48 hours, with discharge occurring just 18 hours after the operation.”

He further added, “By combining precision implant technology, robotic assistance, and enhanced recovery protocols, we can significantly reduce hospital stays and improve overall patient satisfaction.”

This case reflects Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket’s continuous focus on innovation in orthopaedics and its commitment to patient-centred care. The hospital continues to set new standards in joint replacement outcomes, offering advanced treatment options that prioritise both safety and quality of life.
