Aster CMI Hospital Performs Rare Triple Spinal Decompression Surgery Using Minimally Invasive Technique

Bengaluru: Aster CMI Hospital has successfully performed a rare and complex triple spinal tandem decompression surgery in a single sitting using minimally invasive techniques. The procedure showcases the hospital’s advanced neurosurgical capabilities, multidisciplinary coordination, and commitment to improving outcomes for patients with severe spinal disorders.

An elderly patient presented with severe and progressive back pain radiating to the lower limbs, along with numbness, walking difficulty, and weakness in the hands. Detailed evaluations and imaging revealed multi-level spinal cord and nerve compression affecting the neck, upper back, and lower back.

The patient had not responded to conservative treatment and experienced worsening symptoms.

After discussing various options, including staged surgeries, the team decided to perform all three decompressions in one session to minimise multiple anaesthesia exposures and accelerate recovery.

The intricate procedure involved relieving pressure on the spinal cord and nerves across all affected levels and stabilising the spine using advanced state-of-the-art spinal technologies.

Dr Akshay Hari, Consultant – Neurosurgery and Spine Surgery, Aster CMI Hospital, explained that the surgery required exceptional precision and teamwork. “Managing multi-level spinal compression in one sitting demands careful planning and execution.

Minimally invasive techniques using small 2 cm tubes allow us to perform such surgeries safely and efficiently, enabling faster recovery and better outcomes,” he said.

Dr Ravi Gopal Varma, Director – Aster Global Institute of Neurosciences and Lead Consultant – Neurosurgery, added, “This case demonstrates our expertise in handling complex spinal disorders using a multidisciplinary approach. Performing three-level decompressions in one sitting highlights our focus on surgical precision and patient safety.”

The success of this surgery reinforces Aster CMI Hospital’s role as a leading centre for advanced neurosurgery and spine care, combining innovation, collaboration, and compassionate patient care.
