Hyderabad: A phlebotomist from Apollo Diagnostics recently played a crucial role in saving the life of a 43-year-old Hyderabad resident during a home sample collection. The incident highlights the importance of timely medical intervention and demonstrates Apollo Diagnostics’ focus on patient safety and quality service.
Mehtap, who works with a leading auto brand in Hyderabad, had scheduled a full-body check-up. During the process, a sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure caused initial dizziness. The phlebotomist immediately identified the early signs of a potentially serious reaction.
Having recently completed Basic Life Support (BLS) training, he administered the necessary first-aid measures, stabilizing Mehtap before further complications could arise. An Apollo ambulance soon arrived, and the patient was taken for additional care.
This incident emphasizes the importance of preparedness in handling medical emergencies. In line with World Heart Day, Apollo Diagnostics has trained over 1,000 phlebotomists in BLS, ensuring their patient-facing staff can provide timely assistance in critical situations, in addition to accurate sample collection.
“The safety of our patients is our top priority,” said Mr. Sriram Iyer, CEO, Apollo Health and Lifestyle. “This situation with Mehtap highlights how crucial BLS training is for our staff. Early recognition, prompt action, and preparedness are essential to safeguarding the health of our patients, especially as lifestyle-related health issues increase.”
The BLS training initiative is part of Apollo Diagnostics’ ongoing efforts to strengthen its workforce and reassure patients that they are in capable hands during routine tests.
Apollo Diagnostics operates over 5,000 touchpoints across India, supported by a strong network of home collection phlebotomists. Its Digi-Smart Central Reference Laboratory (CRL) + GRL in Chennai is a fully automated facility designed to accelerate diagnostic timelines and ensure precise, error-free operations to enhance patient care.
Patients and their families often find reassurance in knowing that medical professionals present during home sample collections are prepared to handle critical situations.
In this case, Mehtap’s family praised the phlebotomist’s quick thinking and the seamless coordination with the Apollo ambulance team, underscoring how preparedness can make a difference when minutes count.
Looking ahead, Apollo Diagnostics plans to expand its focus on patient safety across its nationwide network, combining technology, skilled staff, and structured training programs.
By integrating advanced diagnostic tools with trained personnel, the company aims to provide accurate results and immediate support, creating a safer and more reliable healthcare experience for all its patients.
