KIMS Performs Dual Hip Replacement on 50-Year-Old

Update: 2025-11-26 06:00 GMT

Thane: In a remarkable display of surgical expertise and teamwork, KIMS Hospitals, Thane, successfully performed a bilateral total hip replacement on a 50-year-old male teacher who had been suffering from bilateral hip avascular necrosis with secondary hip arthritis. The patient had experienced severe disability, was unable to stand comfortably or climb stairs, and suffered from intense night pain that disturbed her sleep.

Following thorough clinical evaluation and counselling, the patient underwent a bilateral stitchless total hip replacement under spinal anaesthesia. The minimally invasive surgery ensured faster recovery and reduced postoperative pain. By the time of discharge, the patient was able to walk, sit, and even climb stairs independently with the support of a walker.

The surgical team faced several challenges, including preventing complications such as excessive bleeding, infection, and deep vein thrombosis (DVT). To address these, the team adopted a meticulous approach with careful intraoperative planning and execution. Hypotensive anaesthesia was used to minimize blood loss, which was limited to just 450 ml.

The surgery was conducted in a laminar flow modular operation theatre under strict sterile protocols, significantly reducing the risk of infection. Early mobilization with physiotherapy and the use of FloTrac pumps further helped prevent DVT and aided faster recovery.

Commenting on the success of the procedure, Dr. Swapnil Zambare, Consultant – Arthroplasty & Joint Replacement, KIMS Hospitals, Thane, said, “This case demonstrates how even complex procedures like bilateral hip replacement can be performed safely and efficiently when backed by meticulous planning, advanced surgical techniques, and a multidisciplinary team. Our goal was not just to replace the joints but to restore her mobility, confidence, and quality of life — and we’re proud to have achieved that.”

This successful case reinforces KIMS Hospitals’ commitment to providing world-class orthopaedic care through the seamless blend of advanced technology, surgical precision, and patient-centric rehabilitation practices.
