KIMSHEALTH Trivandrum Saves Mother and Newborn’s Life After Severe Bike Accident

Thiruvananthapuram: The timely intervention of doctors at KIMSHEALTH Trivandrum has saved the lives of a 26-week pregnant woman and her newborn. The woman, severely injured in a bike accident, underwent multiple surgeries while on a ventilator. Both mother and child are now on the path to recovery, thanks to the coordinated efforts of the hospital's various departments.

The 26-year-old woman was admitted to the Department of Emergency Medicine with severe injuries, including internal bleeding, a ruptured diaphragm, bowel injury, lacerated spleen, and bleeding into the chest, all indicative of multi-organ damage.

In addition to these injuries, the placenta had separated from the uterus, and the baby's heartbeat began to slow down. An emergency cesarean section was performed to deliver the baby, who weighed only 850 grams. The newborn was immediately transferred to the neo-natal ICU for further care.

Following the C-section, the mother underwent two surgeries, each lasting three hours, to control bleeding and repair her injured diaphragm, bowel, and spleen. After a two-week hospital stay, the mother was discharged, while the baby remains hospitalized for follow-up treatment and is recovering steadily.

Dr Sanoop Koshy Zachariah, Senior Consultant and Professor in the Department of General and Minimally Invasive Surgery, who led the surgeries, emphasized the challenges of the procedures: "Both surgeries were highly challenging, but it is heartening and relieving to see both the mother and baby regain health, considering the complexities of the injuries the mother sustained. There was significant blood loss, but the quick medical intervention saved two lives—an expectant mother and her unborn child."

Other members of the treatment team included Dr Geetha P, Senior Consultant in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Dr Varghese Yeldho, Consultant in HAepatobiliary, Pancreatic & Liver Transplant Surgery, Dr Deepak V, Clinical Director & Coordinator of Critical Care, Dr Nisha Prasannan, Specialist in General and Minimally Invasive Surgery, and Dr Nimisha Joy and Dr Poornima Kasthuri, Consultants in Anesthesia.
