Minimally Invasive Heart Procedure for Elderly Patient Conducted at Max Hospital, Saket

New Delhi: Doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket have successfully treated an 83-year-old patient suffering from multiple serious health conditions by implanting a dual-chamber leadless pacemaker, a procedure performed for the first time in India.

The patient, who had chronic kidney disease, hypertension, and gout, was admitted after experiencing recurrent fainting spells. Detailed cardiac evaluation revealed an atrioventricular (AV) block, causing an abnormally slow heartbeat and posing a severe risk to life.

To manage this complex case, the cardiology team led by Dr. Balbir Singh, Chairman of Cardiology at Max Hospital, Saket, opted for a minimally invasive implantation of the AVEIR DR dual-chamber leadless pacemaker.

Unlike conventional pacemakers that require chest incisions and wires, this device is inserted through a catheter, avoiding surgical cuts and stitches.

Dr. Balbir Singh explained, “This procedure involved implanting the dual-chamber leadless AVEIR DR pacemaker in India. The patient tolerated the surgery well, had no complications, and was able to walk within hours. He was discharged just one day after the procedure.”

Elaborating on the benefits, Dr. Singh added, “The AVEIR DR pacemaker transforms cardiac care by removing the need for traditional leads and surgical pockets — two common causes of infection and complications in standard pacemakers.

This wireless device allows the atrial and ventricular chambers to communicate and synchronize in real time, closely matching the heart’s natural rhythm. It offers patients greater comfort, no visible scars, and faster recovery.”

The AVEIR DR system enables wireless communication between the atrial and ventricular components, supports retrievability, and allows for future upgrades, making it a versatile and patient-friendly option for managing heart rhythm disorders.

The patient has recovered well and is expected to return to normal activities soon.

The successful procedure at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, reflects the growing adoption of advanced, minimally invasive cardiac treatments in India, setting a new benchmark in personalized heart care.
