Chennai : Promed Hospital, Chennai, a leading centre for advanced cardiac and critical care, has successfully performed a protected angioplasty on a 95-year-old man, one of the oldest patients in Asia to undergo such a complex cardiac procedure.
The achievement expands the possibilities of heart treatment in elderly patients and demonstrates Promed’s expertise in geriatric cardiac care.
A Case of Precision and Expertise
The patient, Mr S, was admitted after suffering a major non-ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI), which had significantly weakened his heart. Despite advanced age and multiple health issues including hypertension, anemia, and a previous stroke the cardiac team led by Dr Arun Kalyanasundaram, Director & Head of Cardiology, carried out a carefully planned multi-vessel percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
To ensure safety, doctors used the Impella CP, a miniature heart pump that temporarily supports cardiac function during the procedure. Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS) imaging provided real-time visuals to guide precise stent placement.
Drug-Eluting Stents (DES) were placed in the Right Coronary Artery (RCA) and Left Main Artery (LMA), while Drug-Eluting Balloons (DEB) were used to clear blockages in the Posterior Left Branch (PLB) and Diagonal artery a combination rarely performed in patients of this age.
Successful Procedure and Recovery
The angioplasty was completed without complications. Mr. S recovered well, was discharged in stable condition, and has resumed light physical activity and daily routines — an encouraging outcome for a 95-year-old cardiac patient.
Doctors’ Perspectives
Dr Arun Kalyanasundaram commented, “Performing angioplasty in a 95-year-old patient required not only skill but also careful planning. Every stage, from assessment to stent placement, was executed with precision to ensure safety and long-term benefit. This success reflects the importance of teamwork and patient-specific care.”
Dr Spoorthi Arun, Founder & Managing Director of Promed Hospital, said, “We are committed to providing advanced cardiac care for patients of all ages. This successful protected angioplasty using the Impella heart pump shows how technology, collaboration, and compassion can lead to safe outcomes even in high-risk cases.”
Patient’s Experience
Mr S shared, “After my heart attack, I was told my heart was weak and had several blockages. The doctors gave me hope and confidence. Today, I feel stronger and can spend time with my family again. They not only treated my heart but gave me a new lease on life.”
Advancing Elderly Cardiac Care
This successful procedure highlights how complex cardiac treatments can be safely performed in very elderly patients when guided by expertise, technology, and individualized care.
