Women’s Day 2026: Experts Highlight Five Essential Health Tests Every Woman Should Undergo
Doctors recommend key preventive tests including haemoglobin, TSH (thyroid), Vitamin B12, Vitamin D3, mammography, and Pap smear.
As women continue to balance multiple roles as professionals, caregivers, mothers, and leaders, health experts are urging them not to overlook their own well-being. On the occasion of International Women’s Day, doctors emphasise that preventive healthcare and routine screening play a critical role in detecting health conditions early and maintaining overall wellness.
“Preventive health check-ups are one of the most effective ways for women to stay healthy and detect potential health issues early. Many conditions, such as anaemia, thyroid imbalance, or vitamin deficiencies, develop silently and may go unnoticed until they begin affecting overall well-being. Tracking a few basic health reports regularly can help women take timely action and make informed decisions about their health,” said Dr Santwan Mehta, Gynaecologist and Obstetrician at Apollo Hospitals, Ahmedabad.
Dr Vandana Sinha, Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Apollo Hospitals, Ahmedabad, added that women often tend to neglect their own health while caring for others. “A woman often prioritises the needs of her family above her own. However, good health begins with self-care. When women take proactive steps to undergo regular screening and preventive care, they not only safeguard their own well-being but also ensure they can continue to support their families and communities,” she said.
Doctors recommend that women undergo a few essential health tests periodically as part of their preventive healthcare routine.
One of the most important tests is the haemoglobin test, which helps detect anaemia — a common health concern among women in India. Anaemia is often linked to nutritional deficiencies and menstrual blood loss. Low haemoglobin levels may cause fatigue, weakness, dizziness, hair fall, and reduced immunity. Regular screening helps identify deficiencies early and allows timely dietary improvements or medical treatment.
Another key test is the Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) test, which evaluates thyroid function. The thyroid gland regulates metabolism, energy levels, mood, and menstrual health. Thyroid disorders are increasingly common among women and may present as unexplained weight gain or loss, fatigue, irregular periods, or mood fluctuations. Early detection enables effective management through medication and lifestyle adjustments.
Doctors also emphasise the importance of Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D3 tests, as deficiencies in these nutrients are widely observed, particularly among urban women. Vitamin B12 deficiency may lead to fatigue, nerve-related symptoms, weakness, or memory issues, while Vitamin D3 is essential for bone health, muscle strength, and immunity. Limited sun exposure and sedentary lifestyles often contribute to these deficiencies.
Screening for cancers is another crucial component of preventive care. Mammography, recommended for women above the age of 40, is an important screening tool that helps detect breast abnormalities at an early stage. Early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes and encourages greater awareness about breast health.
Similarly, the Pap smear test, generally advised for women above the age of 30, helps detect abnormal changes in cervical cells that may indicate early signs of cervical cancer. Doctors recommend undergoing this test every three years, or as advised by a healthcare provider, to ensure timely diagnosis and intervention.
As International Women’s Day is observed, healthcare experts reiterate that regular health check-ups, balanced nutrition, physical activity, and timely screening can help women lead healthier, stronger, and more fulfilling lives.
