In a major medical achievement, the Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) at AIIMS Bhopal has successfully performed a highly complex heart surgery, giving a new lease of life to a young patient suffering from multiple life-threatening conditions.

The patient, a 30-year-old man from Hoshangabad (now Narmadapuram district), had been battling serious health complications for nearly six months before being referred to AIIMS Bhopal. His medical history included a heart attack, paralysis, and kidney dysfunction, making his case extremely challenging. Further investigations revealed the presence of several large blood clots in the left ventricle of his heart, along with severe weakening of the heart muscle.

Doctors explained that these clots were responsible for the heart attack he suffered six months earlier. Around 20 days before reaching AIIMS Bhopal, the patient’s condition worsened when a blockage developed in the artery supplying blood to the kidneys, and he also suffered paralysis. Despite seeking treatment at multiple hospitals, his health continued to deteriorate, prompting doctors to refer him to AIIMS Bhopal for advanced care.

After a thorough evaluation by the CTVS team, specialists found multiple mobile clots inside the left ventricle. These clots posed a very high risk, as they could travel to vital organs such as the brain or kidneys, potentially causing stroke, permanent paralysis, or even death. Given the severity of the situation, the medical team decided that urgent surgical intervention was the only viable option.

The doctors performed a complex open-heart procedure known as a left ventricular thrombectomy. During the surgery, all the clots lodged inside the heart were carefully removed. This significantly reduced the risk of future strokes and other serious complications.

Following the surgery, the patient was closely monitored in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), where his condition remained stable. He was later shifted to the general ward and has since made a remarkable recovery. According to the surgical team, the patient is now in good health and continuing to improve.

AIIMS Bhopal officials highlighted that this successful surgery reflects the institute’s growing capability to manage complex and high-risk cardiac cases. With advanced infrastructure, modern surgical techniques, and a skilled team of specialists, patients in Madhya Pradesh no longer need to travel outside the state for treatment of such serious conditions.

The achievement reinforces AIIMS Bhopal’s role as a leading centre for advanced cardiac care and offers renewed hope to patients with complex heart diseases.
