A man died after being trapped in an elevator at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital on Friday.
In a shocking incident, a man died after being trapped in an elevator at the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Friday. The deceased, identified as Arup Bandopadhyay, a resident of Dum Dum on the northern outskirts of the city, had reportedly gone to visit his son, who is admitted to the trauma care centre on the fifth floor of the hospital. While trying to reach the ward, he got stuck inside a malfunctioning elevator and remained trapped for over an hour.
Family members and relatives alleged that there was no elevator operator or hospital staff available to respond during the emergency, which may have contributed to the fatal outcome. Following the incident, they staged protests within the hospital premises, demanding accountability and immediate action from authorities.
Hospital officials stated that the complaints would be addressed and assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted into the incident, though no official explanation for the cause of death had been provided at the time of reporting. A large police contingent from Tala Police Station was deployed to the hospital to control the situation and pacify the aggrieved relatives.
The incident has once again drawn attention to R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, which has been in the national spotlight since August 2024 following the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor within its premises. Subsequent investigations also uncovered major financial irregularities at the institution, with the former principal, accused of being the key conspirator, arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and currently in custody.
