Chained child admitted to mental hospital in Agra after video goes viral

The kid's family, belonging to Gorakhpur, had reached Agra for treatment of the child who, according to the parents, had a tendency to harm himself and was thus chained.

Based on the disability certificate, issued by the Chief Medical Officer of Sant Kabir Nagar, doctors in the Institute of Mental Health and Hospital termed it a case of cerebral palsy, a disability caused by damage to the brain and not a psychiatric disorder.

However, required clinical investigations would be carried out as part of the treatment, they said.

On Sunday, a video went viral, showing a 10-year-old boy on the pavement, tied with chains.

He was walking along the road near Agra College with his parents, enduring the heat.

The family had arrived from Gorakhpur and claimed that they had gone to the Mental Hospital of Agra, now known as the Institute of Mental Health and Hospital (IMHH), but were asked to come after two days.

As a result, they set up shop by the side of the road, tying the youngster and setting the cot down on the sidewalk.

People reached out after the video went viral. Child rights activist Naresh Paras coordinated, Dr. Ajay Kumar Singh of Municipal Corporation sent the team to the zone to take the child to the shelter.

Dr. Dinesh Rathore, Director of the Mental Health Institute and Hospital, alerted the team of doctors in emergency and asked to bring the child to the Mental Health Institute.

Within some time, the child was admitted from the footpath to the emergency of the mental health institute. Now he is undergoing treatment.

According to Naresh Paras, the mother of the child reported that the child had a high temperature and had previously been injured after falling in the house. Such brain injury is frequently the cause of cerebral palsy.
