Bengaluru Launches Free HPV Vaccination for Girls After Hyderabad
Bengaluru has launched a free vaccination drive for economically disadvantaged girls to protect against cervical cancer. This follows a similar initiative in Hyderabad, marking a crucial step in India’s fight against the disease.
What is Cervical Cancer?
Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer affecting women. It is caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a group of over 200 related viruses. Some types of HPV can lead to genital warts and cancers, making vaccination an essential preventive measure.
Bengaluru’s Vaccination Drive
On Wednesday, Bengaluru administered the first dose of the HPV vaccine to 500 adolescent girls from economically weaker sections. The drive, launched in collaboration with the Jivika Foundation and Tekion, aims to protect against cervical cancer.
India’s Cervical Cancer Burden
According to ICMR, India reports around 123,000 new cases of cervical cancer annually, with 67,500 deaths. This makes prevention efforts like the HPV vaccine crucial in reducing the country’s cancer burden.
How Effective Is the HPV Vaccine?
The HPV vaccine is highly effective if administered before exposure to the virus. The WHO recommends vaccination for girls aged 9 to 14, as it offers the best chance of preventing cervical cancer in the future.
Following the success of Hyderabad and Bengaluru, the vaccination drive will continue in multiple phases across other cities, including Chennai. These efforts aim to ensure broader protection for young girls across India.
