NATIONAL CANCER AWARENESS DAY 2024

November 7th marks National Cancer Awareness Day in India, aimed at raising awareness about cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment.
HISTORY OF NATIONAL CANCER AWARENESS DAY
Initiated in 2014, the day coincides with the birth anniversary of Marie Curie (1867), Nobel laureate and pioneer in cancer research. India’s National Cancer Control Program started in 1975, focusing on treatment facilities and later shifted to prevention and early detection by 1984–85.
IMPORTANCE OF NATIONAL CANCER AWARENESS DAY
Cancer refers to conditions involving the rapid growth of abnormal cells that spread and invade other body parts (metastasis). In 2020, cancer accounted for over 1 crore deaths globally. Most common new cases: breast (22.6 lakh), lung (22.1 lakh), colon/rectum (19.3 lakh), prostate (14.1 lakh), and stomach cancer (10.9 lakh).
CANCER RATE AND STATISTICS IN INDIA
India has 20-25 lakh cancer patients at any time, with 7 lakh new cases annually. GLOBCAN 2020 reported 13.24 lakh new cases. Major cancers in men: lip/oral cavity (16.2%), lung (8%), and stomach (6.3%). Major cancers in women: breast (26.3%), cervix (18.3%), and ovary (6.7%). Cancer deaths reached 8,51,678, with 60% of cases in ages 35-65.
WHY IS CANCER A MAJOR HEALTH CONCERN IN INDIA?
Cancer is the second leading cause of death in India, with over 1.3 million new cases yearly. Contributing factors include an ageing population, urbanization, poor diet, inactivity, and high tobacco use. Challenges like a large population, economic inequality, and limited healthcare access worsen the issue. Late diagnoses increase mortality, highlighting the need for better education and awareness.
CANCER TYPES IN INDIA
Breast cancer, Cervical cancer, Lung cancer, Oral cancer, Colorectal cancer are the most common types of cancer in India.

Addressing cancer in India requires a multi-faceted approach involving early detection, education, and improved healthcare access. Public awareness and proactive measures are vital for reducing the impact of cancer and saving lives.
