On the occasion of World Lung Cancer Day 2024, here are some interesting myths and facts related to lung cancer.
Myth: If you have lung cancer, you must have a persistent cough.

Myth : Lung Cancer Only Affects Smokers
FACT: While smoking is the leading risk factor for lung cancer, non-smokers can also develop the disease. Factors such as exposure to secondhand smoke, radon gas, air pollution, and genetic predisposition contribute to lung cancer risk. Approximately 20% of people diagnosed with lung cancer have never smoked.
Myth : There’s No Way to Prevent Lung Cancer
FACT: While not all lung cancer cases can be prevented, several measures can significantly reduce risk. Quitting smoking, avoiding exposure to secondhand smoke, reducing exposure to environmental pollutants, and testing homes for radon can all contribute to lowering lung cancer risk.
Myth: Only older adults get lung cancer.
FACT: Lung cancer can occur in younger individuals, although it is more common in older adults. Factors like smoking history and exposure to certain risk factors can contribute to the development of lung cancer at a younger age.
Myth: Lung cancer is the same in everyone.
FACT: Lung cancer is a diverse disease with various subtypes and stages. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC) are the two main types, each with different characteristics and treatment options.
