Bhubaneswar: AIIMS Bhubaneswar has successfully performed its first robotic knee replacement on a 66-year-old woman — a first for Odisha’s government medical sector and Eastern India.

This marks a notable shift in orthopaedic care, combining cutting-edge robotic technology with public sector accessibility.

According to an official statement from the institute, this is the first-ever robotic knee replacement conducted in the government sector of Odisha and Eastern India, setting a new benchmark for precision-driven, technology-assisted surgeries in the region.

“The procedure was executed with the help of advanced robotic technology and went smoothly. The patient is currently in a stable condition,” said Dr. Ashutosh Biswas, Executive Director of AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

Dr. Biswas praised the orthopaedics team for successfully carrying out the procedure and emphasised the importance of the newly established robotic surgery facility.

“With robotic surgery now available at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, we are making advanced healthcare more inclusive and equitable,” he added.

Dr. Bishnu Prasad Patro, Head of the Orthopaedics Department, outlined the benefits of using robotic systems in surgical procedures.

“This technology reduces the risk of human error and enhances surgical precision by offering real-time feedback, enabling surgeons to perform complex steps with greater accuracy,” he said.

The hospital stated that the availability of robotic-assisted surgery at a government institution like AIIMS Bhubaneswar reflects its commitment to integrating innovative technology to improve patient outcomes and provide state-of-the-art medical care accessible to all.
