American Oncology Institute at Citizens Specialty Hospital Offers New Hope to 93-Year-Old Battling Advanced Colon Cancer
Hyderabad: The American Oncology Institute (AOI) at Citizens Specialty Hospital, Hyderabad, has successfully treated a 93-year-old man diagnosed with advanced colon cancer, demonstrating its expertise in cutting-edge cancer care and minimally invasive surgery. The patient, Mr. Gheesaram, presented with persistent abdominal pain and weight loss over two months. Upon thorough evaluation, he was diagnosed with cancer of the ascending colon, which is part of the large intestine located on the right side of the abdomen.
The surgical team at AOI performed a laparoscopic-assisted radical right hemicolectomy, a complex procedure involving the removal of the right section of the colon, followed by the reconnection of the remaining parts of the intestine. Despite the challenges posed by the patient's age, the surgical team managed the procedure with precision, ensuring safe removal of the cancerous segment. The patient showed steady recovery and was discharged in stable condition on the fifth postoperative day.
Harish Trivedi, CEO of CTSI – South Asia, emphasized the significance of this successful treatment in advancing cancer care in India. "This case underscores the expertise and innovation at AOI. Our goal is to continue setting new benchmarks in cancer treatment, ensuring access to world-class care for even the most complex cases. Mr. Gheesaram’s positive outcome reflects our dedication to offering hope and healing, irrespective of age or health condition," Trivedi said.
The minimally invasive nature of the laparoscopic procedure provided several advantages, particularly for an elderly patient like Mr. Gheesaram. The approach is associated with reduced recovery time and lower surgical risks, which are crucial factors for older patients. The surgery required advanced laparoscopic techniques along with complex anesthesia management, ensuring the procedure's safety and effectiveness.
Dr. Prabhakar P, Regional Chief Operating Officer at AOI, expressed pride in the team’s success. “Successfully treating a patient of this age and complexity speaks volumes about the dedication and skills of our oncology team. At AOI, our focus is not only on delivering state-of-the-art cancer care but also on enhancing the quality of life for our patients, regardless of age or case complexity,” Dr. Prabhakar stated.
Dr. Pratap Varma, a leading expert in surgical oncology, laparoscopic, robotic, and HIPEC surgery at AOI, praised the patient’s recovery. “Given Mr. Gheesaram’s advanced age, we were cautious of potential risks. However, his resilience, combined with our team’s capabilities, allowed us to achieve a successful outcome. We are delighted to see him recovering well," Dr. Varma added.
The AOI team will continue to monitor Mr. Gheesaram’s progress, ensuring that he receives the necessary follow-up care. AOI remains committed to providing world-class cancer treatment, reinforcing its position as a leader in oncology across India.
