Lung Cancer in 70-Year-Old Diagnosed Through Advanced CBCT-Guided Cryo Biopsy at Fortis Noida
Noida: Fortis Noida has successfully performed a Cone Beam CT (CBCT) guided cryo biopsy of the lung, a procedure that helped doctors accurately diagnose lung cancer in a 70-year-old patient whose condition had gone undetected despite multiple tests at several city hospitals.
The patient, a chronic smoker, came to Fortis Noida with increasing breathlessness and rapid weight loss. Earlier tests elsewhere had shown only signs of infection or unclear results. A PET CT scan at Fortis revealed a suspicious lesion in the lung.
Standard biopsy options were ruled out because of the high risk of lung puncture and the possibility of getting non-diagnostic samples. The lung mass also appeared partly necrotic, which made traditional techniques like bronchoscopy, fluid analysis, and CT-guided biopsy less effective.
To address this, the Pulmonology team led by Dr. Rahul Sharma, Additional Director, Pulmonology, used a CBCT-guided cryo-lung biopsy — a minimally invasive, next-generation method that combines real-time 3D imaging, enhanced navigation, and augmented fluoroscopy. This enabled the team to collect intact tissue samples from the viable areas of the lung while avoiding damaged regions.
The biopsy confirmed Non-Small Cell Carcinoma (lung cancer), and further lymph node analysis revealed early cancer spread. With an accurate diagnosis and staging, doctors could immediately begin the appropriate treatment, preventing unnecessary surgery and delays.
Dr. Rahul Sharma said, “This case shows how advanced imaging and precise biopsy techniques can help overcome complex diagnostic challenges. The CBCT-guided cryo-lung biopsy allowed us to identify and stage the cancer accurately, ensuring timely treatment for the patient.”
Mr. Mohit Singh, Zonal Director, Fortis Noida, added, “Our focus remains on bringing advanced medical technologies to patient care. The use of CBCT-guided cryo-lung biopsy underlines our commitment to precision-driven diagnosis and improved clinical outcomes.”
The success of this procedure underscores Fortis Noida’s role in advancing modern diagnostic care for lung diseases and expanding access to next-generation biopsy technologies in North India.
