Malla Reddy Narayana Cancer Hospital Treats Rare Ewing’s Sarcoma Case with HIPEC
Hyderabad: In a case that demonstrates how medical innovation and seamless teamwork can redefine possibilities in cancer care, Malla Reddy Narayana Cancer Hospital, Suraram, Telangana, has successfully treated a rare case of primary peritoneal Ewing’s sarcoma using a combination of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC). This marks the first reported instance of this treatment approach being used for the condition in India.
The patient, 24-year-old Gautham Kumar, had previously undergone two lines of chemotherapy at another institution before approaching Malla Reddy Narayana Cancer Hospital. He was diagnosed with primary peritoneal Ewing’s sarcoma, a highly aggressive and exceptionally rare malignancy, particularly uncommon in the abdominal lining (peritoneum).
Because of the rarity and complexity of the disease, the diagnosis and treatment required precision planning, expert surgical execution, and the coordination of a multidisciplinary team. The procedure was led by Dr. Harish Dara, Senior Consultant – Surgical Oncology, who emphasized the importance of collaborative effort and modern techniques in such rare cases.
Dr. Harish Dara shared, “This case represents the best of surgical innovation and team collaboration. When combined with complete cytoreduction, HIPEC can offer patients a real chance at long-term survival in situations where traditional treatment options fall short.”
The procedure’s success was also the result of critical support across departments. Dr. G. Narendra Prakash, Senior Anesthetist, highlighted the importance of intraoperative care, saying:
“The success of this high-risk surgery required seamless coordination across multiple departments. Intraoperative stability was critical, and we ensured continuous monitoring and management throughout the extended duration of the procedure.”
The hospital’s leadership also acknowledged the significance of this case and the capabilities of their team.
Dr. Ch. Bhadra Reddy, Chairman, Malla Reddy Vishwavidyapeeth, remarked:
“This extraordinary case reflects our ongoing mission to bring advanced and accessible cancer care to the region. We continue to invest in infrastructure, technology, and expertise that allow us to manage even the rarest and most challenging cases with confidence and care.”
Dr. Ch. Preethi Reddy, Vice-Chairman, Malla Reddy Vishwavidyapeeth, added:
“Treating primary peritoneal Ewing’s sarcoma with advanced HIPEC is extremely rare — both globally and in India — due to the nature of the disease and the expertise required. It demands not only skilled surgeons but also specialized infrastructure and a strong multidisciplinary team. Malla Reddy Narayana Cancer Hospital stands among the country’s leading advanced cancer centers, and I sincerely appreciate the dedication and excellence of our medical team.”
