53-Year-Old Regains Vision After Advanced Facial Reconstruction at Fortis Faridabad
Faridabad: Doctors at Fortis Escorts Faridabad successfully performed a complex facial and eye reconstruction surgery on a 53-year-old patient from Churu, Rajasthan.
A severe facial injury had left the patient fighting for his sight after a wood grinding machine brutally tore away the upper and lower eyelids of his left eye. The worker was rushed to the emergency department at Fortis Escorts Faridabad after he suffered a deep wound about seven centimetres long, extending from his eyelid to his cheek, leading to lacerated, torn skin, heavy bleeding and significant muscle exposure.
Doctors described the injury as among the most severe eye and facial traumas they have ever encountered, prompting a life and vision-saving effort. Imaging revealed a tear in the clear outer surface (cornea) and front wall of his left eye, accompanied by swelling and pockets of air around the injured area.
Fortunately, no fracture of the surrounding orbital bones was present, though the adjacent eye‐movement muscles showed mild swelling. Apart from the eye injury, his other vital signs and blood test results were within normal range.
The complex case was led by Dr Mohsin Khan, Senior Consultant, General Surgery, Fortis Escorts Faridabad, supported by a multidisciplinary team. When rushed to the hospital, the patient presented with a deep laceration approximately 7x2 cm, extending from the upper eyelid down to the cheek, with heavy bleeding and visible muscle damage.
A CT scan of the face revealed a tear in the left cornea and anterior uveoscleral layer, soft tissue swelling, and orbital emphysema around the injured eye. Fortunately, no fracture of the orbital bone was detected, though mild swelling of the surrounding eye muscles was noted.
Following an ophthalmology evaluation by Dr Arvind Kumar, Senior Consultant – Ophthalmology, Fortis Escorts Faridabad, who confirmed the patient’s surgical readiness, a multidisciplinary team, along with the General Surgery, performed a complex facial and left eye reconstruction under general anaesthesia.
The procedure required meticulous repair of the damaged tissues. Torn muscles and surrounding structures were delicately sutured using fine stitches to restore both function and mobility of the eye. The skin was sutured with precision using cosmetic surgical techniques to reduce scarring and preserve facial aesthetics.
Speaking about the case, Dr Mohsin Khan, Senior Consultant, General Surgery, Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad, said, “The injury of the patient was quite severe, involving both cosmetic and functional loss around the eye.
The key challenge was to preserve vision while reconstructing the eyelids and surrounding tissues. The team has done a commendable job by carrying out the surgery with immense precision. Timely medical intervention and the patient’s stable condition helped us achieve a positive outcome.”
Dr Abhishek Sharma, Facility Director, Fortis Escorts Faridabad, added, “This case exemplifies the high level of clinical expertise and coordination across specialities at Fortis Escorts Hospital, Faridabad.
Our ability to manage such rare and complex trauma cases reflects the hospital’s commitment to providing comprehensive, timely, and compassionate care to every patient.”
The patient has steadily recovered without any complications post-surgery. He was discharged in satisfactory condition and was advised to rest, have a protein-rich diet and prescribed antibiotics, eye drops, and pain management medication.
