AIIMS Bhopal Doctors Perform Rare Bentall Procedure on 44-Year-Old Patient

Bhopal: A 44-year-old man from Sehore district, Madhya Pradesh, underwent a complex Bentall procedure at AIIMS Bhopal to treat a large aortic aneurysm and severely leaking aortic valve, without requiring a blood transfusion despite having a rare B-negative blood group.

The patient had been experiencing chest pain and palpitations for six months and had visited several hospitals before being admitted to AIIMS Bhopal. Investigations revealed an aortic aneurysm measuring nearly 8 to 10 cm, which carried a high risk of rupture.

Dr Yogesh K Niwaria, who was part of the surgical team, said, "The patient’s aortic valve was found to be severely leaking. To treat this condition, both the aorta and the aortic valve had to be replaced with artificial grafts, a procedure known as the Bentall surgery. This is considered highly complex due to the technical precision it demands."

Despite the added challenge of the patient’s rare blood group, the surgical team went ahead after thorough evaluation. The procedure involved removing the damaged aorta and valve and replacing them with artificial grafts.

Dr M Kishan, who was also involved in the surgery, added, "A significant aspect of this case is that, despite the rare blood group, the patient did not require a blood transfusion during this highly complex surgery. This reflects the surgical precision, coordination, and dedication of the expert medical team."

The patient was shifted to the ICU after the operation and showed steady improvement.

AIIMS Bhopal Director Dr Ajai Singh said, "This case is an excellent example of AIIMS Bhopal's clinical excellence. Performing such a highly complex and high-risk cardiac surgery on a patient with a rare blood group not only demonstrates our surgical capabilities but also reflects our commitment and dedication to providing world-class healthcare services to the people of Madhya Pradesh."

The entire treatment was provided free of cost under the Ayushman Bharat scheme. Earlier, patients from Madhya Pradesh requiring such surgeries were often referred to hospitals outside the state.
