Ahmedabad: Shalby Hospital Naroda has successfully completed its first kidney transplant, showcasing the hospital’s expertise in advanced healthcare and commitment to delivering high-quality medical services.

The recipient, Kalpesh Patel, 37, had been living with chronic kidney disease for several years. His condition progressively worsened since 2022, and by January 2025, his kidney function had fallen below 10%.

Despite undergoing dialysis three times a week, his health continued to deteriorate, and his heart function dropped to 25%, making his situation critical.

Consultant Nephrologist Dr Mahendra Mulani at Shalby Hospital Naroda, discussed the option of a kidney transplant, the only definitive treatment for Patel’s condition. Following this, Patel’s father volunteered to donate one of his kidneys to save his son’s life.

Both donor and recipient underwent a comprehensive series of medical evaluations conducted by a multidisciplinary team comprising Dr Mahendra Mulani, Dr Kosha Patel, Dr Kirtipal Visana, and Dr Darshit Shah to ensure medical suitability and compatibility.

After receiving the required government approval, the transplant surgery was successfully performed at Shalby Hospital Naroda.

Patel’s recovery was quick and encouraging. His kidney function improved within days, creatinine levels returned to normal, and his overall health stabilised. His appetite and strength have returned, and he is expected to resume normal activities soon after his recovery period.

The donor has also recovered fully and remains in good health. Commenting on the procedure, Dr Mahendra Mulani said, “This successful kidney transplant marks a new beginning for Kalpesh Patel and his family.

It highlights Shalby Hospital Naroda’s expertise in advanced renal care and brings hope to many patients on dialysis who dream of a healthier, better quality of life.”
