Kolkata: At Manipal Hospital EM Bypass, under the guidance of Dr. Pradeepta Kumar Sethy, Director of Gastroenterology for the EM Bypass and Mukundapur Cluster, specialists successfully removed a sharp metal pin from the stomach of 4-year-old Krishanu Roy from Barasat, Uttar 24 Parganas.

Krishanu had accidentally ingested the pin while drinking water after placing it in his bottle during play, prompting his family to rush him to the hospital.

Upon admission, doctors identified a sharp metallic object lodged in his stomach, posing a serious risk of internal injury, including gastric wall perforation. Immediate intervention was required to prevent complications.

Dr. Pradeepta Kumar Sethy explained, “Ingesting sharp objects is a serious emergency for children, and prompt action is essential to avoid life-threatening outcomes. In this case, the metal pin could have caused perforation or internal bleeding if it moved further.

We quickly planned an emergency endoscopy and retrieved the pin without the need for surgery. The procedure was successful, and Krishanu’s recovery has been smooth. This case underscores the importance of timely medical attention and parental vigilance.”

Using advanced endoscopic equipment, Dr. Sethy, along with his team of Dr. Prasanta Debnath, Dr. Rahul Samanta, and Dr. Prashanta Kumar, carefully removed the object while ensuring no harm to internal organs.

Post-procedure, Krishanu was closely monitored by Dr. Nicola Judith Flynn, Head of Paediatrics and Neonatology, and her team. He responded well and was discharged in stable condition.

Krishanu’s father said, “We are extremely grateful to Dr. Sethy and the team at Manipal Hospital EM Bypass. From the moment we arrived, they handled everything with professionalism and care. It was frightening to see our son in pain, and the thought of possible internal injury was terrifying. Thanks to their swift action and expertise, he is safe and recovering well at home.”

This incident highlights Manipal Hospital EM Bypass’s ability to provide timely paediatric emergency care, advanced endoscopic treatment, and effective multidisciplinary coordination to ensure safe outcomes for young patients.
