Dengue Surge in Manipur: Over 3,500 Infected, One Death Reported
Imphal: At least 129 new dengue cases have been reported in Manipur, raising the total number of infections to 3,594 this year, according to state health officials.
A report by Dr Rajeev Priyokumar Singh, State Malaria Officer under the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP), confirmed that one dengue related death occurred in Bishnupur district. Singh noted that authorities have been adhering to central NVBDCP guidelines to contain the outbreak since January.
As per data from the National Centre for Vector Borne Diseases Control under the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry, the state recorded 2,463 dengue cases and five deaths last year. The current year’s 3,594 positive cases were detected between January 1 and October 28, from a total of 7,883 tests conducted.
Imphal West has reported the highest number of cases at 2,507, followed by Imphal East (655), Bishnupur (102), Thoubal (84), Senapati (63), Kakching (45), Ukhrul (44), and Chandel (25). The mixed populated district of Jiribam, bordering southern Assam, has recorded only one dengue case so far.
Health officials highlighted that most of the affected districts Imphal West, Imphal East, Bishnupur, and Thoubal lie in the densely populated Imphal Valley, while others like Senapati, Kakching, Ukhrul, and Chandel are in the hill regions.
Authorities attributed the rise in dengue cases to prolonged monsoon rains and stagnant water, which create favorable breeding conditions for Aedes mosquitoes.
The Health and Family Welfare Department has intensified vector control measures such as fogging operations and awareness drives across affected areas.
Local bodies and departments have urged residents to maintain cleanliness, remove stagnant water, and use mosquito repellents and nets to prevent infection.
Officials have also advised individuals with symptoms like high fever, body pain, or rashes to seek prompt medical attention to avoid complications.
