5.43-kg Baby Girl Born After Surgery at Indore’s PC Sethi Hospital

Indore: At PC Sethi Civil Hospital in Indore has drawn widespread attention after the successful delivery of a baby girl weighing 5.43 kg. This newborn is the heaviest baby ever delivered in a government-run hospital in Madhya Pradesh, highlighting the increasing strength and capability of public healthcare facilities in managing complex pregnancies and deliveries.

The mother, 24-year-old Reeta, came to the hospital for her first delivery under high-risk conditions. She was diagnosed with severe pre-eclampsia—a dangerous pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure and swelling—along with generalized edema. Her blood pressure was critically elevated at 160/110 mmHg. Compounding the risks, the baby was significantly larger than average, making natural delivery unsafe for both mother and child. Given these complications, doctors decided to perform a cesarean section to ensure their safety.

Doctors Speak on Critical Procedure

“This was a highly complex and high-risk case,” said Dr. Komal Vijayvargiya, the gynecologist who led the delivery. “We’re closely monitoring the baby’s heart rate and blood pressure, but I am pleased to report that both mother and child are stable and expected to be discharged soon.” The surgery was supported by anesthesia expert Dr. Sunita Bhatnagar, whose expertise was crucial in managing the anesthesia safely throughout the operation.

Comparison with Previous State Deliveries

Hospital officials noted that the previous heaviest baby born in a state government hospital weighed 5.1 kg and was delivered in Mandla district in 2021. This recent delivery surpasses that weight, setting a new benchmark for public hospitals across Madhya Pradesh.

Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr. Madhav Hasani visited the hospital to personally commend the medical and support staff involved in this case. “This successful delivery is a testament to the high level of maternal care now available under government initiatives like the Janani Suraksha Yojana,” he said, highlighting the importance of government schemes in improving maternal and child healthcare.

Free, Quality Healthcare Now Within Reach

Officials emphasized that such complicated deliveries, which were once only possible at private hospitals, are now routinely managed in government facilities. This has been made possible through strengthened healthcare infrastructure, the availability of trained specialists, and the provision of free care under various state and central government health programs. The progress not only ensures better health outcomes for mothers and babies but also makes quality healthcare accessible to all, regardless of economic status.

This delivery serves as an encouraging example of how public healthcare is evolving in Madhya Pradesh to meet the challenges of high-risk pregnancies and complex medical cases with success and compassion.
