AINU Doctors Successfully Perform Life-Saving Surgery on Premature Infant

Hyderabad: The Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology (AINU) recently carried out a successful dual surgery on a premature infant born at 32 weeks, weighing only 2kg. The baby, whose parents are from Hyderabad, was diagnosed with a relatively rare condition known as posterior urethral valves (PUV). This condition, typically found in male infants, involves an abnormal growth of tissue that obstructs or narrows the urinary flow from the bladder through the urethra, potentially leading to kidney damage due to urine buildup. The blockage also caused reduced amniotic fluid around the baby in the womb, resulting in premature delivery. PUV is usually present from birth and can be detected either during pregnancy or shortly after. Treatment generally requires surgery to remove the obstruction and restore normal urination. Continuous monitoring is essential to assess and manage any kidney damage as the child grows.

Dr. Prabhu Karunakaran, Consultant Paediatric Urologist, AINU led the medical team in deciding to perform both circumcision and valve fulguration surgery in a single session. This approach aimed to minimize the infant's exposure to anaesthesia and reduce surgical risks.

Operating on such a small and delicate patient posed significant challenges, including precise anaesthesia management, strict infection control, and the use of specially designed instruments. The medical team carefully planned and executed the procedures. The surgery started with a circumcision, followed by valve fulguration, where endoscopic techniques were used to remove the obstructive valves in the urethra. This allowed the baby to urinate normally, preventing potential kidney damage.

The two-hour operation was successful. The infant was then moved to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for close monitoring, where medical staff kept a close watch on the baby’s condition, ensuring proper care and recovery.
