Pune: The National Institute of Naturopathy (NIN), operating under the Ministry of Ayush, has launched a nationwide campaign centered around the theme ‘Healthy Ageing and Longevity’ as part of the 7th Naturopathy Day celebrations. This initiative aligns with Gandhian principles of natural healing and sustainable living as preventive strategies against diseases, according to IANS.

The campaign underscores the importance of promoting well-being among India’s elderly population, which is projected to increase to 347 million by 2050. It highlights the significance of fostering compassion, encouraging good nutrition, embracing healthy lifestyles, and addressing emotional and mental health challenges. Prof. (Dr.) Satya Lakshmi, Director of NIN, Pune, emphasized the initiative's holistic approach, stating, “In today’s era of nuclear families, the elderly often face social and emotional challenges. Our campaign not only provides physical health interventions but also encourages community-building and compassion.”

As part of the campaign, health camps were organized at 35 old age homes in and around Pune, reaching nearly 1,500 senior citizens. These camps featured yoga sessions, naturopathy treatments, and health discussions, tailored to support the physical and emotional well-being of the elderly. According to IANS, these sessions promote holistic care and enhance quality of life.

The campaign also extends its outreach to schoolchildren to create awareness about the importance of caring for senior citizens. “This effort aims to instill empathy and responsibility in younger generations, fostering intergenerational bonds,” added Dr. Lakshmi. The initiative operates under the motto, ‘Turn to Nature for Physical Health’ and ‘Return to Community for Emotional and Mental Health,’ emphasizing the dual necessity of connecting with nature and strengthening community ties.

Additionally, NIN has announced an Inter-Collegiate Intellectual Meet scheduled for January 10-11, 2025, in Pune. The event will provide a platform for 500 students from yoga and naturopathy colleges nationwide to engage in healthy competition and knowledge exchange. According to IANS, this meeting is part of NIN’s broader efforts to advance education and awareness in the field of naturopathy.
