What are the top Health Concerns of Indians across ages? New survey reveals
Centrum, recently unveiled a comprehensive survey titled ‘The Centrum India Health Survey,’ along with Kantar to mark World Nutrition Day on 28th May. This detailed study of over 2,000 Indians, spanning across gender, age group and geographies, assessed their nutritional status, understanding of their daily diet, and the top health concerns that affect Indians across various life stages.
Some of the top findings of the survey include:
1. Indians on an average are actively managing four health concerns and these concerns increase with age.
2. Among adults, 48% are concerned with low immunity, 43% with low energy and the other top two concerns are bone health, and digestive health.
3. Metabolic health, low energy and bone & joint concerns peak in the 50+ age group.
4. For kids, the topmost concerns are immunity (55%), growth (33%), and energy (30%).
5. Despite these concerns, only 4% urban Indians supplement their diet with health supplements daily.
6. This gap is due to 52% of the population believing their diet and home remedies are sufficient for their bodies, indicating a nutrition supplementation gap.
In response to these findings, Centrum India launched the initiative 'Your Nutrition Matters,' aimed at spreading knowledge to bridge this gap. This campaign is dedicated to educating the Indians about their body's nutritional requirements, with a special focus on daily RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowances). It is common belief that a plate full of food might give us complete nutrition, but it may not always contain the required or adequate amount of nutrients. The fact of the matter is, it's not just about filling the plate, it’s also about consuming the right mix of nutrients like vitamins & minerals and in the right proportions. For instance, in India, the intake of fruits and vegetables is extremely low; people merely eat 100g to 200g of vegetables and fruits per day while the recommendation is 500g per day .
Additionally, the Your Nutrition Matters initiative encourages people to explore the benefits of multivitamins, as a supplement to diet, for meeting their RDAs and ensuring optimal health.
Ms. Garima Gupta, Category Lead – Vitamin and Mineral Supplements, said, "The findings of the Centrum India Health Survey by Kantar underscore the urgent need for increased awareness and education on the importance of a proper mix and quantity of nutrients, such as vitamins and minerals, for maintaining overall health among the Indian population. There seems a significant gap between consumers' understanding of their micronutrient needs and the diets they are currently consuming. This highlights the essential role of multivitamins in meeting the average daily intake of vital nutrients. Through the 'Your Nutrition Matters' initiative, we aim to empower individuals with knowledge and support, helping them make informed choices for their health."
