Geneva: The World Health Organization (WHO) has responded to the recent decision taken by US President Donald Trump regarding the United States'  withdrawal from the organization. In its statement, WHO expressed regret over this move and emphasized the critical role the organization plays in global health.

"The World Health Organization regrets the announcement that the United States of America intends to withdraw from the Organization. WHO plays a crucial role in protecting the health and security of the world’s people, including Americans, by addressing the root causes of disease, building stronger health systems, and detecting, preventing and responding to health emergencies, including disease outbreaks, often in dangerous places where others cannot go," the organization stated.

Since its establishment in 1948, the United States has been a founding member of the WHO, working alongside 193 other Member States to shape the organization’s priorities. Over the past seven decades, the U.S. has played a vital role in key global health initiatives, such as the eradication of smallpox and the near-elimination of polio.

"Together, we ended smallpox, and together we have brought polio to the brink of eradication. American institutions have contributed to and benefited from membership in WHO," the WHO's statement noted.

The WHO also pointed out the significant reforms the organization has undergone in recent years, particularly over the past seven years. These reforms, carried out with the participation of the U.S. and other Member States, have focused on improving accountability, cost-effectiveness, and impact, ensuring better outcomes for people worldwide.

"We hope the United States will reconsider, and we look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue to maintain the partnership between the USA and WHO, for the benefit of the health and well-being of millions of people around the globe," the statement concluded.

As the global community watches closely, the WHO remains committed to its mission of promoting health and addressing global health challenges, regardless of the political landscape.
