Update: 2025-01-02 12:56 GMT

Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic, progressive lung disease that causes scarring of the lung tissue, making it increasingly difficult to breathe. The exact cause of IPF is unknown, but it leads to a gradual decline in lung function over time.

As the condition worsens, it severely impacts a patient's ability to perform everyday activities and can be life-threatening. In this video, Dr Sarthak A Rastogi, Consultant in Respiratory Medicine at Holy Family Hospital, discusses the treatment options for IPF.

He explains how antifibrotic medications help slow the progression of the disease. Dr Rastogi also highlights the importance of supportive care, including oxygen therapy for those with low oxygen levels, pulmonary rehabilitation to improve fitness and quality of life, and vaccinations to prevent infections.

The overall goal is to manage symptoms and enhance the patient's quality of life.
