How Much Sugar Is Too Much Sugar? - Dr Sanjay K Shah

Update: 2025-04-10 12:20 GMT

In this video, Dr Sanjay K Shah, Senior Consultant Physician, Diabetologist, and Endocrinologist at Narayana Hospitals, Kolkata and Howrah, addresses the common question: "How much sugar is too much sugar?"

He explains that while the body needs sugar—found in both simple forms and complex carbohydrates—excessive intake can lead to health issues such as weight gain, fatty liver disease, diabetes, and heart disease, particularly when combined with a sedentary lifestyle.

Dr Shah outlines the recommended daily sugar limits: approximately 36 grams for men and 24 grams for women. He advises limiting carbohydrate intake to about 50% of daily calories, or roughly 25 kilocalories per kilogram of body weight. He also discusses how artificial sweeteners can help reduce overall sugar consumption.
