Mizoram's HIV Crisis: Over 32,000 Infected, Highest HIV Rate in India
Rising HIV Cases in Mizoram
Mizoram has the highest HIV prevalence in India, with a rate of 2.73%, far surpassing the national average of 0.2%. Over 32,000 people are infected, raising alarm in the state.
As per January 2025, there are 32,287 confirmed HIV cases and 5,511 deaths in Mizoram. In the last 9 months (April 2024–January 2025), 1,769 new infections were detected.
Causes of HIV Transmission
Dr. Ralte noted that most HIV transmissions in Mizoram stem from two main causes: unsafe sexual practices (67%) and sharing unsterilized needles (30.44%), primarily due to intravenous drug use.
Recognizing HIV Symptoms
Common HIV symptoms include fatigue, fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, swollen lymph nodes, and persistent diarrhea. Early diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment.
Key Prevention Strategies
Practice safe sex (use condoms), participate in needle exchange programs, and get regular HIV testing. Ensure access to antiretroviral therapy (ART) for those infected
Mizoram’s legislators have pledged Rs 50,000 each to support continuous ART treatment for people living with HIV, ensuring no disruption in care.
HIV Self-Testing Kits
To make HIV testing more accessible, self-testing kits have been introduced. These kits, which require a saliva or blood sample, provide results within minutes, ensuring privacy and convenience.
Government, healthcare workers, and the public must work together to reduce HIV stigma, raise awareness, and ensure accessible testing and treatment to tackle the crisis.
