Myth or Fact: Is weight loss alone enough to cure diabetes? Ft. Dr Nilakshi H. Sabnis
Diabetes is a lifelong condition characterized by elevated blood sugar levels resulting from insufficient insulin production or ineffective insulin utilization. It can lead to various complications affecting vital organs, including the heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves, making effective management essential.
There is a common misconception that weight loss alone can cure diabetes. While it is true that significant weight loss can improve blood sugar control and, in some cases, lead to remission of type 2 diabetes, it is not a guaranteed cure for all patients. Type 2 diabetes, often associated with lifestyle factors such as obesity, can sometimes be put into remission through weight loss and lifestyle changes. However, this approach is not universally applicable, as diabetes management is multifaceted and requires a comprehensive strategy.
Type 1 diabetes, on the other hand, is an autoimmune condition in which the body’s immune system attacks insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. As a result, people with type 1 diabetes require lifelong insulin therapy, and weight loss does not play a role in curing this form of diabetes.
Effective diabetes management goes beyond weight loss. It involves a combination of medication, a well-balanced diet, regular physical activity, and medical supervision. While weight loss can certainly aid in better blood sugar control, ongoing management remains critical to prevent complications and ensure overall health.
In this video, Dr Nilakshi H. Sabnis, a Consultant Physician and Diabetologist at Zen Hospital, Mumbai, Maharashtra, delves into the nature of diabetes, its impact, and the importance of holistic management. She also clarifies the common misconception regarding diabetes and weight loss, emphasizing that while weight loss can be beneficial, it is not a standalone solution for diabetes cure.
