New Delhi: In a rare case blending mental health concerns with surgical emergencies, a private hospital in Delhi successfully treated a 20-year-old man who swallowed a shaving razor following a quarrel with his father. The incident highlights the critical need for mental health awareness and timely intervention.

The young man, who suffers from depression and suicidal tendencies, ingested the razor in two parts—the blade holder and the handle. His father, also grappling with a mental illness, further complicates the family’s struggles. Medical scans revealed the blade holder lodged in his stomach, while the handle had advanced to his large intestine, posing a serious threat to his life.

A skilled surgical team, led by Dr. Tarun Mittal and comprising Dr. Anmol Ahuja, Dr. Shresth Manglik, Dr. Rakesh S., Dr. Karthik Krishna, and Dr. Tanushree Nahata, undertook the complex procedure. The operation was conducted in two steps. First, a laparotomy was performed to open the stomach and extract the blade. Next, the handle, located in the colon, was carefully pushed further down the intestinal tract. Using a sigmoidoscope, surgeons meticulously removed it without causing damage. The procedure was a testament to precise planning and seamless teamwork.

“This case was unique not just because of the nature of the foreign object but also the psychological factors involved,” explained Dr. Mittal. He emphasized the importance of early intervention for mental health issues and reducing societal stigma, which often prevents individuals from seeking timely help. “Fear and shame around mental illness can escalate into life-threatening situations,” he added.

The young man’s actions, driven by emotional distress, underline the urgent need for greater mental health awareness and support systems. After the surgery, he recovered well physically and is now being referred for counseling to address his depression and suicidal thoughts. The family has also decided to seek mental health care for his father to manage their collective well-being.

The patient’s family expressed their gratitude to the medical team for their swift action. “We are deeply relieved and thankful to the doctors for saving his life,” said the patient’s mother.

Dr. Ajay Swaroop, Chairman of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, praised the surgical team for their expertise and underscored the hospital’s commitment to holistic care. “Mental health is an integral part of our approach, and special efforts are made to address these challenges,” he said.

This case serves as a reminder of the critical interplay between mental and physical health and the importance of destigmatizing mental illness.
