Indian Medical Association Launches Comprehensive Guide on Headache Management
India: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has introduced a new booklet titled "Headache Algorithm: A Guide to Headache Management," to enhance the treatment of headache disorders in India. This initiative is timely, addressing the significant impact headaches have as a leading cause of neurological disability worldwide. Supported by Dr. Reddy's Laboratories Limited, a Hyderabad-based global pharmaceutical company, the booklet is part of IMA's broader medical efforts.
The booklet aims on the prevalence of headache disorders, particularly migraines, delving into their various causes and providing guidance on their diagnosis and management. It includes sections on managing primary and secondary headaches, identifying warning signs that necessitate specialist referral, and the proper use of abortive and preventive treatments. The evidence-based strategies presented are designed to help clinicians customize their treatment plans effectively.
To enhance informed decision-making in clinical practice, the booklet also includes decision algorithms for diagnosis and management of different types of headaches and headache disorders with other different comorbidities.
The booklet also emphasizes the importance of early intervention and patient education, aiming to improve overall quality of life for those affected by headache disorders.
The distinguished panel of eight headache specialists, comprising Dr K Ravishankar (Clinical Physician), Dr T K Banerjee (Neurologist), Dr A V Srinivasan (Neurologist), Dr Dharmesh Patel (Neurologist), Dr A V Jayakrishanan (Neurosurgeon), Dr Bimal Shah (ENT Surgeon), Dr Rajan Shah (ENT Surgeon) and Dr Jayesh Lele (General Practitioner, Program Convenor and Ex. Hon. Secretary General, IMA) has been instrumental in shaping the content of this booklet
