AIIMS Rishikesh Performs Complex Surgery to Remove 35 kg Bone Tumour from Patient's Leg

Uttarakhand: A 27-year-old man who had been living with a massive 35 kg bone tumour in his leg for six years has undergone successful surgery at AIIMS Rishikesh, marking one of the most complex tumour removal procedures performed in the country.
The patient, Salman from Sambhal district in Uttar Pradesh, first noticed a small lump near his thigh which grew slowly over time. In the past six months, the tumour underwent a cancerous transformation, severely restricting his mobility and daily activities. After visiting several hospitals in Moradabad and Delhi without a solution, he approached AIIMS Rishikesh.
Doctors found the tumour had grown to the size of a large pumpkin, leaving him confined to bed. A multidisciplinary team decided to proceed with a high-risk operation after detailed evaluation. The surgery was performed on June 9 and involved specialists from orthopaedics, cardiovascular surgery, and plastic surgery.
The operation was led by Dr Mohit Dhingra, Orthopaedic Surgeon at AIIMS Rishikesh, with support from Dr Anshuman Darbari and Dr Madhubari Vathulya.
“This surgery was extremely challenging due to the tumour’s unprecedented size and abnormal blood supply. The tumour weighed 34.7 kg and measured 53×24×19 inches. It was so large that an MRI scan could not be performed; instead, we conducted angiography to map its abnormal vascularisation,” said Dr Mohit Dhingra.
Following the procedure, Salman is recovering well and is expected to be discharged soon. He thanked the team for helping him regain his mobility and relieving him from years of pain.
Executive Director of AIIMS Rishikesh, Prof Meenu Singh, commented, "This rare and complex surgery highlights the advanced surgical expertise, teamwork, and commitment of AIIMS Rishikesh. It demonstrates our capability to treat the most challenging diseases and brings hope to patients who have been turned away elsewhere."
Medical Superintendent Prof B Satya Shri added, "This feat is a testament to the dedication of our medical professionals. We are proud of our team’s perseverance and excellence."
The hospital said the case reflects its focus on multidisciplinary care and capacity to manage rare and complex medical conditions.
