Pune: A 57-year-old woman suffering from severe headaches and mobility challenges has made a full recovery after undergoing a highly complex neurosurgical procedure at Sahyadri Super Speciality Hospital, Hadapsar. The patient, diagnosed with multiple meningiomas at the craniovertebral junction—a rare condition affecting only 1%–10% of cases—received expert care after visiting multiple hospitals in Pune without a solution.

The surgical team, led by Dr Siraj Basade, Senior Neurosurgeon, performed a complete tumour excision using advanced intra-operative neuro-monitoring and ultrasound technology, ensuring the procedure’s precision and safety.

The patient initially presented with symptoms of raised intracranial pressure, weakness in her arms, and stiffness in her legs. MRI scans revealed a large tumour pressing against critical structures, including the cerebellopontine angle, vertebral artery, and spinal cord, obstructing brain fluid flow and causing debilitating headaches.

To stabilize the condition, doctors first placed a VP (ventriculoperitoneal) shunt to drain excess brain fluid, which immediately alleviated her headaches. This was followed by a posterior fossa craniotomy, a delicate procedure to access and remove the tumours.

"This advanced technology allowed us to safely navigate around critical parts of the brain and successfully remove the tumour without causing damage," explained Dr. Basade. "Intra-operative neuro-monitoring and ultrasound were pivotal in ensuring the patient’s safety during such a delicate surgery."

Post-surgery, the patient experienced remarkable improvements, regaining her ability to walk and muscle strength with physiotherapy, achieving a full recovery.

"This patient had a very rare and complex tumour. Without the use of advanced surgical techniques, the surgery would have posed significant risks," added Dr Basade. "These technologies allowed us to navigate around critical structures like the vertebral artery and cervical cord, ensuring a safe and complete tumour removal."

Grateful for the expert care, the patient’s family stated, "We had visited several hospitals in Pune, but it was here at Sahyadri that we found hope. We are forever grateful to Dr Basade and the Sahyadri team for giving us our life back."
