New Delhi: In a rare and complex surgical achievement, doctors at BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital successfully removed an enormous 18.5-kilogram fibroid uterus, approximately the weight of five newborn babies, from a 56-year-old woman, marking one of the largest fibroid uterus removals reported globally in the past six years.

The patient had been silently suffering for nearly six years with multiple fibroids, one of which had expanded her abdomen to a gigantic size, causing immense discomfort in day-to-day activities, restricted mobility, and pressure on surrounding organs.

The surgery was led by Dr Dinesh Kansal, Senior Director & Head - Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Laparoscopic Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, BLK Max Super Speciality Hospital, along with a multi-disciplinary team from urology, anaesthesia, and critical care.

Commenting on the case, Dr. Dinesh Kansal said, “This patient had a massive tumour in her uterus. It was more complex and larger than we anticipated from her pre-surgical scans. Meticulous planning was needed preoperatively for the surgery. Cases like this highlight the importance of strong teamwork, as such cases often demand real-time decision-making and on-the-spot planning that cannot always be anticipated beforehand.”

Explaining the case further, Dr. Dinesh Kansal said, “The benign fibroid had grown so large that the mammoth uterus was pressing against nearby organs, including the intestine, bladder, and ureter. Her internal anatomy was severely distorted, and key organs were closely adherent to the fibroid. The patient also had internal scarring from previous surgeries, which made the procedure more complex.”

The operation lasted several hours, and the patient’s condition was closely monitored throughout. She was discharged on the fourth postoperative day. She has recovered well and has resumed a comfortable and active lifestyle.

Further commenting on the case, Dr. Supriya Mahipal, Associate Consultant, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital, said, “This case demanded not only technical skill but constant intraoperative judgment. Navigating the challenges successfully, with minimal complications, is what made this surgery truly exceptional. This case highlights the remarkable resilience of the human body but also underscores the importance of early medical evaluation for chronic symptoms”.

Fibroids are a common condition in women, particularly during their reproductive years. In some cases, these benign growths in the uterus often develop gradually and may go unnoticed at first. Many women delay treatment for fibroids because the symptoms build slowly over time. Early medical advice can help avoid complications and lead to much simpler treatment.

With this successful surgery, BLK-Max Super Speciality Hospital continues to demonstrate its expertise in handling rare and high-risk gynaecological cases through a coordinated, patient-first approach.
